Abstract

This study aims to analyze how audiences in Surabaya interpret the trans woman character in the television series Squid Game: Season 2. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research employed reception analysis and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the decoding process occurs actively and is influenced by life experiences, social environments, and exposure to various discourses. The study shows that media can serve as a catalyst for social reflection, although it does not automatically alter audience ideology. Most informants initially occupied an oppositional decoding position, rejecting the representation of trans women due to perceived contradictions with religious or moral values. However, after watching the series, several informants shifted toward negotiated or dominant positions. Audience reception of the trans woman character is dynamic and complex, shaped by the interaction between media content and the individual’s ideological readiness to engage with diversity. Keywords: Reception Analysis, Trans Woman, TV Series, Squid Game Season 2
