Abstract

The Marengan River is one of the rivers that flows through Sumenep Regency and plays a vital role in supporting aquaculture, livestock, and irrigation. However, according to the 2017 data from the Environmental Agency (DLH), the water quality of the Marengan River has exceeded the Class III quality standard. This study aims to analyze the water quality status of the Marengan River using the Pollution Index (PI) method, based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 115 of 2003, and a spatial approach utilizing ArcGIS. Water samples were taken at five locations, each spaced approximately 1.5 km along the river. The parameters analyzed include BOD, COD, DO, TSS, Nitrate, Phosphate, and Total Coliform. The PI results indicate that the water quality of the Marengan River falls under the slightly to moderately polluted category, with increasing pollution levels toward the downstream area. Spatial mapping using IDW interpolation confirms that the downstream segment is the most polluted zone. The integration of the Pollution Index and GIS approach has proven effective in illustrating river water pollution both quantitatively and spatially.
