Abstract
Indonesia is a country with a high level of cultural, ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity, making tolerance an important aspect in maintaining harmony. However, cases of intolerance and bullying among children, especially in elementary schools, are still quite high. Data from KPAI and FSGI show that bullying often occurs due to a lack of understanding of the values of tolerance. Therefore, character education through the introduction of national history, such as the Youth Pledge event, is important in instilling an attitude of mutual respect from an early age. To answer these challenges, an interesting and technologically advanced learning media was designed through an interactive story book based on Augmented Reality (AR) that carries the theme of the Youth Pledge as an educational media to convey messages about the importance of unity and tolerance to elementary school students in grades 4–6. The design process uses qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were obtained through literature studies, observations, interviews with science teachers, and distributing questionnaires to elementary school students in grades 4–6. The main concept in this design is the introduction of tolerance through the history of the Youth Pledge which is packaged in an inspiring and imaginative fictional narrative, using light language in accordance with the character of children. The main characters depict the diversity of Indonesia while introducing important figures in the Youth Pledge event. The creative concept is reinforced with interesting illustrations and interactive features based on Augmented Reality (AR) presenting animation, sound, and magical visualization, so as to arouse imagination while strengthening students' understanding of the values of unity and tolerance. The results of this design are expected to be an effective educational solution to improve historical literacy and form a tolerant character in elementary school students. With a fun and interactive delivery method, this storybook is expected to be able to raise students' awareness of the importance of respecting differences, while also showing the contribution of visual communication design in education through the integration of storytelling, illustration, and Augmented Reality technology.
