Abstract

The phenomenon of declining marriage rates in Indonesia has become a prominent issue on social media, particularly among Generation Z. One of the main contributing factors is the viral “marriage is scary” trend, especially on platforms like TikTok. This trend portrays marriage as a frightening concept influenced by factors such as domestic violence, divorce, and trauma from personal or societal experiences. As a result, the perception of marriage has shifted from being a life goal to merely a life option. This trend is further reinforced by the lack of education regarding the true meaning, readiness, and challenges of marriage. Many young people are unaware of the importance of being mentally, financially, and emotionally prepared for marriage. Although there are programs that address these issues, such as the Pranikah Academy by the Better Youth Foundation, they have yet to reach a wide audience on social media. Therefore, there is a need for an educational medium that aligns with the characteristics and habits of Generation Z. Motion graphics were chosen as the primary medium due to their strong visual capabilities in delivering messages effectively, engagingly, and concisely. Motion graphics can simplify complex information—such as statistical data and psychological concepts—into communicative visual forms. In this design, the motion graphic is developed with attention to an appropriate communication style, including thoughtful choices in color, typography, illustration, audio, and a narrative approach that resonates with the digital habits and realities of Generation Z. The objective of this project is to create an educational motion graphic that can shift negative perceptions about marriage and improve understanding of marital readiness among Generation Z. Using qualitative descriptive methods, including questionnaires, observations, interviews, brainstorming, fishbone analysis, and SWOT, the project gathers data on marriage from the perspective of young people. It is expected that this design will serve as an educational and informative tool addressing marriage-related fears and realities for social media users, especially those from Generation Z.
