Abstract
Music plays an important role in human life, not only as an expression of emotion, but also as a strengthener of community solidarity. In the alternative music community, especially in Surabaya, independent record labels have a strategic role in supporting freedom of expression and artistic innovation. Unfortunately, their contributions are still minimally documented, so they are less well known by the wider public. As an effort to fill this gap, a visual book was designed that documents the history and role of independent record labels in the alternative music community of Surabaya. This book combines informative narratives with visual elements such as photos and illustrations, and is compiled through qualitative methods including questionnaires, interviews, FGDs, and observations. With the title "Record and Release: The History of Alternative Record Label in Surabaya", this book is compiled chronologically and based on data. The narrative presented describes the development of the music community as a whole, covering three main aspects, namely record labels, alternative music, and communities. The visual style adopts the typical aesthetics of independent zines with torn elements, multi-panel layouts, and the use of grayscale colors that reflect the character of the community. This book not only functions as a historical archive, but also as an educational and inspirational medium for actors and enthusiasts of the independent music community. Through its distinctive design and strong visual approach, this book is expected to celebrate the diversity of alternative music in Surabaya and encourage the creative community to continue working.
