Abstract

At first, marriage was considered a fundamental necessity for both men and women. However, over time, the perceived need for marriage has declined year by year, particularly in Indonesia. This decline is driven by various issues related to marriage, leading to reactions such as rejection and fear, which are frequently expressed through narratives on social media. Therefore, this study aims to understand how the discourse on marriage is constructed by women through the "marriage is scary" video trend on TikTok. This research seeks to examine how marriage is perceived as something fearful and how this perception is shaped by women within the "marriage is scary" trend on TikTok. The study employs a qualitative research approach using Rodney H. Jones' Digital Discourse Analysis. The findings reveal that women in these videos construct narratives of fear surrounding marriage, highlighting issues such as patriarchy, negative stigma, and societal expectations imposed on women. This fear is fueled by widespread negative reports on marriage, including domestic violence, infidelity, patriarchal norms, and marriage-related pressures. The phenomenon of marriage anxiety has elicited both positive and negative reactions from various users. The ideology and power of TikTok through its character as a digital platform acts as a forum for users to express their opinions in order to achieve the goals they want to achieve, the perspective of postmodern feminism in the content "marriage is scary" is an opportunity for women to dismantle, challenge, and give opinions and interpret marriage from the perspective of women themselves.
