Abstract
Film is a communication medium that can be used to display social realities in society, women are often the main topic of interest to be brought to the big screen and are often juxtaposed with the concept of beauty, "200 Pounds Beauty" is an Indonesian film that raises issues around the concept of beauty according to the reality in society, which in this film shows how women are willing to do anything even if they have to do it in an extreme way and can endanger themselves in order to be beautiful so that they can be appreciated by their surroundings. This study aims to examine the discourse of the standardization of women's beauty in the film "200 Pounds Beauty" using a qualitative approach with Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis. The focus of the study is how this film represents the standards of beauty constructed by the mass media and its relation to Naomi Wolf's theory of beauty myths. The results of the study show that beauty standards function as a tool of social discrimination where beautiful women get beauty privileges, such as higher appreciation in work, social relationships, and acceptance from society. Meanwhile, women who do not meet the standards often experience social pressure, stigma, and marginalization. In this film, the main character is willing to undergo plastic surgery as a form of struggle to be accepted in a society that places great importance on physical appearance. This reflects Naomi Wolf's theory of beauty myths, which states that beauty has been manipulated as a tool of patriarchal control to limit women, both physically, emotionally, and socially. Beauty myths create constant pressure for women to achieve ideal beauty standards that are often unrealistic. The mass media plays an important role in reinforcing this myth by presenting beauty as the main asset that determines a person's value, where women who are considered beautiful are women who have slim bodies, white skin, and high noses. The film "200 Pounds Beauty" depicts how women are forced to meet beauty expectations in order to gain social acceptance, which ultimately impacts their mental and physical health. This study provides a critical overview of how the discourse of beauty is constructed and its impact on women's lives. Through analysis of text, social cognition, and social context, this study concludes that the film "200 Pounds Beauty" not only represents social reality, but also strengthens the critique of beauty myths as a form of control over women.
