Abstract
The increasing number of vehicles in Indonesia has driven a rise in petroleum consumption, making the need for alternative fuels more urgent. One promising alternative is biodiesel. This study aims to evaluate the effect of using off-grade Crude Palm Oil (CPO), which is not utilized in the palm oil industry, as well as B35 blends, on engine performance, exhaust emissions, and the long-term wear of diesel engine components. The diesel engine used in this research is a Kubota RD 65 DI-NB, operated at a constant speed of 2000 RPM and connected to a Denyo FA-5 alternator with a load of 4000 W. The research method involves processing CPO through a heat treatment process at a temperature of 100 °C to reduce its kinematic viscosity and density, facilitating the fuel injection process. The results indicate that the use of CPO results in a Brake Thermal Efficiency that is 27.54% lower compared to B35, along with higher exhaust emissions of CO, SO₂, H₂, and Particulate Matter. Additionally, the use of CPO significantly accelerates the degradation of engine lubricant over the operating period, as measured through kinematic viscosity, TBN, metal contaminants, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis. To improve combustion efficiency, further research on off-grade CPO with the addition of nanoparticles or additives is highly recommended.
