Abstract
Nickel mining wastewater has the potential to pollute the environment, as it may contain hazardous metals such as chromium (Cr), including Cr(VI), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and other heavy metals. These substances are a primary concern due to their toxic properties and potential negative impact on ecosystems and human health. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of UV-C light intensity, direct sunlight, and optimal contact time on the removal process, as well as to compare the effectiveness of TiO₂ and ZnO in the Resin Immobilized Photocatalyst Technology (RIPT) for hexavalent chromium removal. The method used in this study involves immobilizing photocatalysts onto resin with RIPT dosages of 5g, 10g, and 15g, UV-C light variations of 8 watts, 18 watts, and direct sunlight, with contact times of 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes. The parameter analyzed is Cr⁶⁺. Results indicate that the higher the dose of Resin Immobilized Photocatalyst (RIPT) added, the higher the Cr⁶⁺ removal percentage. The highest Cr⁶⁺ removal was achieved with an RIPT dose of 15 grams, particularly with ZnO. In contrast, TiO₂ showed a lower Cr⁶⁺ removal rate. The selected sampling times of 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes yielded maximum Cr6+ removal percentages at a 180-minute sampling time, likely due to the longer exposure of wastewater to RIPT. In this study, ZnO in the Resin Immobilized Photocatalyst Technology (RIPT) process achieved a Cr⁶⁺ removal efficiency of 96%, which was more optimal compared to TiO₂, with a Cr⁶⁺ removal efficiency of -81%.
