Abstract

The increasing volume of organic waste requires efficient and eco-friendly management solutions. One promising approach is bioconversion using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, which not only decompose organic waste but also produce highly nutritious BSF larvae as an alternative protein source. This study aims to accelerate the growth rate and enhance the nutritional value of BSF maggots by utilizing expired milk in various media. The results show that pH, temperature, and humidity significantly affect maggot growth, with optimal humidity management being essential for success. A mixture of expired milk and coconut pulp provided the highest growth rate, with a Specific Growth Rate (SGR) of 32%. Expired milk increased the maggots' protein content by 66.26% and lysine amino acid content by 5.25%. Additionally, expired milk acted as a bioactivator, speeding up organic material decomposition and achieving a waste reduction index of 82% in treating food waste + expired milk + coconut pulp. Bioconversion with BSF maggots was also faster, requiring only 11 days compared to 30 days using conventional composting methods. These findings demonstrate that expired milk can optimize organic waste management and enhance the nutritional quality of BSF larvae as an alternative protein source.
