Abstract

The consumption of illegal drugs can have severe health consequences and even be life-threatening. Despite the efforts of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) to monitor the distribution of drugs, counterfeit and expired medications are still widely available on the market. This highlights the importance of consumers being more selective in choosing and consuming medications. The government needs to increase public awareness of the dangers of illegal drugs and provide easier access for the public to obtain accurate information about medications. This study aims to examine consumer protection against illegal drugs at the Surabaya BPOM Regional Office and to identify the obstacles or factors that influence the implementation of consumer protection. This study employs an empirical legal research method. Data was collected through a literature review of documents and research interviews. Data analysis was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study show that there are a number of obstacles in efforts to protect consumers from the distribution of illegal drugs. The low level of public knowledge, economic disparities, and the complexity of the relationship between businesses and consumers are the main challenges.
