Abstract

India has long been confronted with the challenge of child marriage, which is prevalent within the country. Nevertheless, between 2016 and 2023, there was a notable decline in the incidence of child marriage, largely attributable to the implementation of the Global Programme to End Child Marriage by UNICEF and UNFPA. The present study analyses the implementation of the programme in India during the specified period. The study employs descriptive methods and qualitative data analysis to examine the implementation of the UNFPA-UNICEF programme in addressing child marriage. The data was collected through a process of desk research. The results demonstrated that UNFPA and UNICEF adopted a management approach in their programme, employing three principal methods: monitoring, capacity building, and problem solving. Monitoring is conducted through data information systems, visits by the Steering Committee, and adaptation of the monitoring system during the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Capacity building involved the development of life skills modules, educational programmes, health training, and the launch of empowerment programmes to address child marriage. Problem solving focused on the resolution of financial issues, research on child marriage data, education, complaint outreach, and adjustment to the pandemic.
