Abstract
Extraction of citronella essential oil using the Microwave Steam Distillation (MSD) method utilizes microwaves and steam supply to heat the material. Heating with microwaves is selective and volumetric. The combination of microwaves and steam supply can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of citronella essential oil extraction. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of time and the ratio of materials to the volume of the distiller (F/D) on the yield of citronella essential oil, determine the optimum operating conditions for the extraction of citronella essential oil using the MSD method with Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and determine the physical and chemical characteristics of citronella essential oil from the best MSD extraction method. Citronella leaves with a water content of 65% were cut into 1-3 cm pieces. Then weighed according to the F/D variable, namely 0.05 g/ml, 0.075 g/ml, 0.1 g/ml, 0.125 g/ml, and 0.15 g/ml. The steam generator was filled with 200 ml of distilled water and heated to boiling. The extraction process was carried out at 450 Watts for 30 minutes, 50 minutes, 70 minutes, 90 minutes, and 110 minutes. The results showed that the extraction time and F/D ratio were directly proportional to the yield obtained until the optimum condition. The best condition was obtained at an extraction time variable of 90 minutes and an F/D ratio of 0.125 with a yield of 2.7771%. The optimum condition of the RSM method was obtained at an extraction time variable of 108 minutes and an F/D ratio of 0.103 with a yield of 2.3301%. The essential oil of citronella obtained from the best condition had physical characteristics in the form of a pale yellow color, a density of 0.94 g/ml, and a refractive index of 1.455. The main components of citronella essential oil obtained from the best conditions are Geraniol 42.65%, Citronellol 12.84%, Citronellal 9.18%, Citral 7.11%, and Geranyl Acetate 3.09%.
