Abstract

Movies are widely used to represent social realities that occur in society, one of which is about patriarchal culture that affects gender equality. The patriarchal system makes women often get different treatment than men, in the end it often puts women at a disadvantage. This research aims to analyze the form of violence in the scene of the film “Like Revenge, Longing Must Be Paid in Full” using John Fiske's semiotics. This research originated from a movie that was made with sensitive issues such as sexual violence and abuse of power. The movie directed by Edwin was adapted from a novel with the same title by Eka Kurniawan. The results found through John Fiske's three levels of analysis (level of reality, level of representation, and level of ideology) are dominated by expressions, speech styles, gestures, voices, dialog, and patriarchy. The violence experienced by the four female characters in this film is a reminder that violence against women, negative labeling of women, and other activities that harm women still occur frequently. This film is proof that gender equality has not been fully realized by all Indonesian people.
