Abstract

Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) is a member of the genus Cymbopogon (family Poaceae) originating from South India and Sri Lanka and is known as citronella in Indonesia. Citronella has great potential to be developed into an essential oil commodity. Extracting citronella into essential oil can increase its sales value because it is needed in various industries such as basic ingredients for cosmetics, perfumes, medicines and aromatics. The Ultrasound Microwave Assisted Extraction (UMAE) method is a combination of methods to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of essential oil extraction. The aim of this research was to examine the effect of adding salt and extraction time on the yield, density and refractive index of citronella leaf essential oil. Apart from that, it is also to find out the chemical composition contained in the essential oil of citronella leaves and to obtain optimal conditions from the extraction process of citronella leaf essential oil using Response Surface Methodology. The citronella leaves were first reduced in size and dried in the oven for 90 minutes at 100oC. Then pre-treatment was carried out using a sonicator for 5 minutes at a temperature of 35oC. Next, the citronella leaf extraction process was carried out using a microwave. The extraction times used in this research were 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes with the addition of salt used, namely 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%. Extraction conditions were carried out using a feed to solvent ratio of 1:10 (w/v) at 450 watts of power. The research results showed that the salt solvent concentration and extraction time affected the yield, density and refractive index. The best results were obtained with a research variable of 60 minutes and a salt solvent concentration of 6% with a yield of 1.975%, a density of 0.8674 gr/ml and a refractive index of 1.454. The main chemical composition of citronella leaf essential oil is geraniol 47.57%, citronellol 12.23%, citronellal 9.55%, citral 5.53%, and geranyl acetate 3.39%. The optimal conditions recommended by Response Surface Methodology are an extraction time of 67.83 minutes and a salt addition concentration of 6.22%.
