Abstract

Urea is a nitrogen-based chemical compound synthesized from the reaction between ammonia and carbon dioxide at specific temperature and pressure ranges. Producing each ton of urea requires 12 m3 of water and generates 2.3 m3 of liquid waste. One of the most common chemicals in wastewater is ammonia (NH3). Electrolysis technology has been developed for treating wastewater containing ammonia. Ammonia electrolysis is a potential application in waste treatment because it is a simple technology with low maintenance costs and nitrogen gas by-products that can be directly released into the environment. The electrolysis process separates water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gases by passing an electric current through electrodes where the electrolyte solution (water and catalyst) is present. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of reducing ammonia (NH3-N), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH, and Total Nitrogen levels using electrolysis methods with copper (Cu) and carbon (C) electrodes, conducted with variations in the number of plates: 2, 4, 6, and 8 plates. The variations in electrolysis time (td) used were 0 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. From this research, it was found that 8 plates with a 120-minute electrolysis time were most effective in reducing ammonia (NH3-N) levels by 84.63%, COD by 20.04%, and pH from the initial level of 9.34 to 8.64. For total nitrogen, the result obtained was that 4 plates with a 120-minute electrolysis time reduced Total Nitrogen by 42.5%.
