Abstract
Indonesia's national financial-literacy score has climbed steadily, yet Generation Z — the cohort that engages most intensively with digital financial services — still struggles to translate this improved literacy into disciplined spending habits, particularly as instruments such as QRIS and e-wallets continue to lower the psychological resistance ordinarily tied to spending cash. This research investigates how financial literacy and digital payment usage jointly influence the consumptive behavior of Generation Z customers of the Kopi Kenangan application in Surabaya. A quantitative, explanatory design was applied to a purposively selected sample of 100 respondents, with data analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings reveal that financial literacy exerts a significant positive influence on consumptive behavior, reversing the negative relationship originally proposed. This outcome implies that more financially literate individuals may overestimate their own self-control — an overconfidence that leaves them susceptible to low-friction, gamified spending cues such as flash sales and multi-tier loyalty incentives. Digital payment usage, in contrast, shows a positive yet statistically non-significant relationship, suggesting that payment convenience alone is insufficient to drive consumptive spending. Together, the two variables account for only a small share of the variance in consumptive behavior, pointing to lifestyle, social-media exposure, and self-regulation as likely stronger explanatory factors that warrant further examination. These results suggest that digital platforms would benefit from adopting responsible design elements — such as spending-awareness prompts — rather than relying solely on financial education to restrain impulsive spending among digitally fluent consumers. Keywords : Financial literacy; Digital payment; Consumptive behavior; Generation Z
