Abstract
N-butanol is a chemical widely used as a solvent, chemical industry intermediate, and fuel additive. The increasing demand for n-butanol in Indonesia has prompted the design of an n-butanol plant from n-butyraldehyde and hydrogen through a hydrogenation process with a capacity of 60,000 tons/year. The production process uses a nickel catalyst in two packed bed reactors arranged in series. The first reactor operates at a temperature of 60°C and a pressure of 15 atm, while the second reactor operates at a temperature of 90°C and a pressure of 14 atm. The reaction product is then purified using a distillation process to obtain n-butanol with a purity of 99.9%. The remaining hydrogen and n-butyraldehyde are recycled to increase process efficiency. The plant is planned to be located in the Kotabumi Industrial Estate, Cilegon City, Banten, with an operating time of 330 days/year. Based on the economic analysis, the ROI before tax was 29.50%, ROI after tax was 22.12%, POT was 2 years and 11 months, IRR was 16.56%, and BEP was 32.4%. Based on the results of the technical and economic analysis, the n-butanol plant with a capacity of 60,000 tons/year was deemed feasible to be established.
