Abstract
Film is a form of mass communication that functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for representing social realities, including gender injustice toward women. Suzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon (2023) portrays various forms of gender injustice experienced by female characters through subordination, stereotyping, violence, and marginalization within a patriarchal system. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender injustice toward female characters in Suzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon (2023) using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. This study employed a qualitative approach using John Fiske's semiotic framework, which consists of the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. Data were collected through documentation of scenes representing gender injustice and analyzed using Mansour Fakih's concept of gender injustice. The findings reveal that the film represents women as vulnerable subjects under patriarchal domination. The forms of gender injustice identified include subordination, stereotyping, marginalization, and physical, sexual, and psychological violence. Suzanna is portrayed as a victim of forced marriage, bodily objectification, and sexual violence, while Minarti illustrates how women may reproduce patriarchal values through jealousy, competition among women, and violent actions. When Suzanna fights for justice, the film reconstructs her as a terrifying supernatural figure. This study concludes that Suzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon (2023) represents gender injustice as a consequence of patriarchal ideology that shapes power relations and women's social position. Keywords: representation, gender injustice, women, John Fiske's semiotics, patriarchy.
