Abstract
TikTok has become one of the most widely used social media platforms for disseminating public information. However, the ease of accessing information also increases the risk of the spread of inaccurate information, which may affect users' level of trust. This study aims to examine the effect of informative communication of public information on TikTok on the trust level of Communication Science students in Surabaya. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The population consisted of active Communication Science students from Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya, and Universitas Airlangga. A total of 100 respondents were selected using the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression with IBM SPSS. The results indicate that informative communication has a positive and significant effect on students' trust in public information on TikTok (Sig. < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.398 indicates that informative communication contributes 39.8% to students' trust, while the remaining 60.2% is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings suggest that public information presented in a clear, complete, accurate, relevant, and understandable manner is more likely to gain students' trust. The findings also support the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and Trust Theory in explaining how trust in public information on TikTok is formed. Keywords: informative communication, public information, TikTok, trust level.
