Abstract
Film, as a medium of mass communication, serves not only as a form of entertainment but also as a medium for conveying social criticism through the representation of various social phenomena. Badrun and Loundri, directed by Garin Nugroho, portrays the practice of power legitimization through the use of symbolic attributes, namely religious attire and police uniforms. This study aims to analyze the representation of symbolic attributes as instruments of power legitimization and to reveal the discourse constructed by Garin Nugroho through the film. This research employs a qualitative approach using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis, which consists of text analysis, social cognition, and social context. The data were collected through observations of the film’s scenes, dialogues, and cinematic elements, as well as a literature review. The findings reveal that symbolic attributes function as instruments of power legitimization because they have been collectively constructed as symbols of authority within society. This study finds that the legitimacy of power is not automatically generated by the attributes themselves but is produced through society’s mental models that associate particular symbols with authority, thereby generating trust, respect, obedience, and fear toward those who wear them. Furthermore, the study finds that Garin Nugroho constructs a discourse on the performativity of power, suggesting that legitimacy can shift to anyone capable of displaying symbols recognized as representations of authority. Through this construction, the film criticizes not only the manipulation of symbolic identities but also society’s tendency to grant legitimacy based on symbolic appearance rather than on an individual's integrity and concrete actions.
