Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) for image creation is increasing among Visual Communication Design (VCD) students, yet it remains accompanied by concerns regarding copyright, work originality, and AI’s impact on the design profession. A knowledge gap exists regarding the factors influencing students’ intention to utilize ChatGPT in supporting visual creative processes, making this an important area of study. This research aims to analyze the factors affecting VCD students’ intention to use ChatGPT in visual creative processes, employing a modified UTAUT model with the addition of Perceived Risk (PR) and Perceived Anxiety (PA). The study was conducted with 386 VCD students from 36 universities across Indonesia using the PLS-SEM method with SmartPLS 4. The results show that, of 14 hypotheses, five were supported. Social Influence (SI) and Effort Expectancy (EE) have a significant positive effect on Behavioral Intention (BI), while PR has a significant negative effect on BI. SI also significantly reduces PR. PA negatively affects EE but positively affects BI, indicating that anxiety toward AI can drive the intention to use it as a form of adaptation. In contrast, Performance Expectancy (PE) and Facilitating Conditions (FC) do not significantly influence BI. The research model explains 30.5% of the variance in BI. These findings suggest that ChatGPT adoption among VCD students is more influenced by social factors, ease of use, perceived risk, and AI-related anxiety than by functional benefits or supporting facilities.
