Abstract

This study aims to analyze the portrayal of gossip about women in the film “Cocote Tonggo 2025”, directed by Bayu Skak. In Indonesian society, gossip is not merely understood as the exchange of information, but also as a social practice related to the formation of norms and the monitoring of behavior, particularly with regard to women. As a form of mass media, film has the ability to both represent and construct social reality through a complex system of signs. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach based on an interpretive paradigm and Roland Barthes’s two-stage semiotic analysis method, which involves three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through non-participant observation of sixteen scene corpora selected purposively based on the criteria of the presence of visual signs of gossip, verbal signs of judgment, mechanisms of Social pressure, and indications of communal myths. The study found that gossip in the film “Cocote Tonggo” is represented through three dimensions: (1) gossip as a communal culture that occurs naturally in both domestic and public spaces; (2) gossip disseminated through systematic patterns ranging from face-to-face interactions to digital platforms; and (3) gossip functioning as a multi-layered instrument of Social pressure that subjugates women’s autonomy over reproductive decisions and their private lives. The dominant myth identified is the ideology of patriarchy, which legitimizes the community’s intervention in women’s private lives in the name of naturalized social norms.
