Abstract
This study aims to examine Generation Z audience reception toward masculinity and violence in the series Weak Hero Class 2. The series portrays various forms of masculinity through bullying, friendship dynamics, and violence that become central elements in the storyline. This research employs a qualitative method using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis approach to understand how audiences interpret the messages presented in the series. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight Generation Z informants who had watched Weak Hero Class 2. The findings reveal that audiences interpret masculinity and violence in diverse ways. Some informants occupied the dominant-hegemonic position by viewing violence as a form of self-defense, courage, and proof of masculinity. Others were categorized within the negotiated reading position, perceiving the relationship between masculinity and violence as influenced by environmental, cultural, and social experiences. Meanwhile, informants in the oppositional reading position rejected the idea that masculinity must always be associated with violence and instead interpreted masculinity through self-control, responsibility, and men’s emotional capability. This study indicates that Generation Z audiences do not passively accept media portrayals of masculinity and violence, but actively negotiate and reinterpret them based on their experiences, values, and social backgrounds. The series Weak Hero Class 2 is understood not only as an action drama, but also as a social reflection on masculinity pressure, violent culture, and the social realities faced by male adolescents. Keywords: Reception Analysis, Generation Z, Masculinity, Violence, Weak Hero Class 2
