Abstract

This study aims to uncover the subjective meanings behind the experiences of out-of-town students (mahasiswa rantau) in Surabaya in implementing frugal living strategies as an effort to build financial resilience through green financial behavior. The study employed a qualitative approach using phenomenological research design and data analysis through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The research informants consisted of eleven out-of-town students actively pursuing their education at various universities in Surabaya, selected through purposive sampling based on their direct involvement in frugal living practices. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, subsequently analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro software. The findings identified three superordinate themes, namely frugal living, green financial behavior, and financial resilience. Out-of-town students perceived frugal living not merely as a money-saving behavior, but as a life orientation that prioritizes needs over wants, implemented through three main strategies: careful purchasing consideration, cost efficiency, and structured budget management. These frugal living practices organically integrated green financial behavior, such as waste reduction, use of durable goods, and a preference for walking. The consistent application of these strategies was found to contribute to the formation of financial resilience through habitual budgeting, separation of emergency funds, avoidance of consumptive debt, and periodic financial evaluation.
