Abstract
This study examines the meaning-making of the "Wong Kito Galo" culture as a symbol of solidarity among migrant students from South Sumatra in Surabaya, employing Herbert Blumer's (1969) symbolic interactionism framework and Dell Hymes' ethnography of communication method. Through in-depth interviews with seven informants and participant observation, it was found that the meaning of Wong Kito Galo transformed from merely an ordinary identity slogan in the region of origin into a source of attachment in the migration context, encompassing four value dimensions: inclusiveness, kinship, solidarity, and pride. This transformation was triggered by a change in status from majority to minority in the metropolitan city of Surabaya and was mediated by intensive social interaction. Wong Kito Galo proved to function as a solidarity adhesive through mechanisms of instant bonding and regeneration based on a "debt of gratitude," as well as a social safety net in crisis situations. The hybrid identity phenomenon of "Arek Kito Galo" demonstrates that the meaning of this symbol is not rigid, but is creatively negotiated in the migration setting. Thus, the meaning of Wong Kito Galo does not weaken; rather, it strengthens and becomes a moral guide and a source of social strength that sustains the lives of migrant students from South Sumatra in Surabaya.
