Abstract
This study discusses the use of film as a medium for responding to issues of family honour, the burden of tradition, and the preservation of cultural identity across generations by representing the values of Batak Toba families througt the Mangongkal Holi tradition. Mangongkal Holi is an ancestral ritual in which the bones of deceased ancestors are gathered and places in a family monument or stone na pir. The Batak Toba people have a strong sense of family, which plays a very important role in their social and cultural life. Dalihan Na Tolu serves as the basis for regulating social roles, traditional practices, kinship relations, and conflict resolution within Batak Toba families. A qualitative approach was used in this study to discover facts and provide an interpretation that showcases the tenacity of Batak Toba society in preserving their traditions to enhance social status (prestige), in order to achieve hasangapon, hamoraon, and hagabeon, as well as to demonstrate the challenges faced by Batak Toba families in returning to Batak land (bona pasogit). Therefore, this study was conducted to analyse in depth how family values are represented through the Mangongkal Holi ritual in the film Tulang Belulang Tulang using qualitative research methods. Twenty-two shots were analysed using the three-level "TV codes" analysis technique developed by John Fiske, which considers the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The results show that Batak Toba families place great value on social honour and their families' status within the Batak Toba community. The social or prestige status of Batak Toba families is reflected in the activities and traditions they perform. The film Tulang Belulang Tulang
