Abstract

This Industrial Work Practice (Internship) was conducted at Pusat Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia Minyak dan Gas Bumi from September 1 to 30, 2024. The purpose of this activity was to gain direct understanding of crude oil processing in the refinery unit and to evaluate the performance efficiency of Furnace 03 (F-03) as part of the atmospheric distillation unit. The refinery unit processes crude oil with a capacity of approximately 3,800 barrels per day through an atmospheric distillation process to produce diesel fuel, Pertasol CA, Pertasol CB, Pertasol CC, and residue. Furnace 03 (F-03) plays an important role in heating crude oil before it enters the evaporator and fractionation column. The efficiency evaluation was carried out using a heat balance method based on operational data, including inlet and outlet temperatures, fuel consumption rate, fuel gas composition, and equipment specifications. The analysis included calculations of heat input, heat absorbed by the process fluid, and heat losses through flue gas and radiation. The results indicate that the performance of Furnace 03 is influenced by fuel composition, excess air ratio, and operating conditions. Furnace efficiency can be improved through proper control of excess air, routine burner maintenance, and regular monitoring of flue gas temperature. Overall, the furnace operates under relatively good conditions but still requires optimization to enhance thermal efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
