Abstract

Communication serves as a primary means in the field of education to build social relationships, convey moral values, and shape students’ character. However, for deaf students, hearing impairments create barriers in understanding messages, making it necessary for teachers to apply appropriate communication patterns. This research focuses on how teachers use communication patterns to shape the character of deaf students. The researcher employed a descriptive approach, with findings obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results show that teachers at SDLB Karya Mulia apply a total communication pattern a combination of sign language, lip movements, writing, facial expressions, and visual media to ensure that messages are effectively received by deaf students. Additionally, two-way communication is implemented to encourage active student participation in the learning process. The communication techniques used by teachers are adjusted according to the students’ intelligence levels: persuasive techniques are used for students with normal intelligence, while instructive techniques are applied to those with lower intelligence or multiple disabilities. These three communication approaches form an adaptive character education system that helps deaf students develop traits such as religiosity, discipline, self-confidence, politeness, and independence. The success of this process also depends on the synergy between competent teachers and supportive parents at home, ensuring that the character values taught at school are consistently internalized in daily life.
