Abstract
This research aims to explore the role of tour guides in interpreting history through walking tour activities in Surabaya, focusing on the Bersukaria Walk and Let’s Walk Surabaya communities. Employing a qualitative approach with an instrumental case study method, this study investigates how tour guides construct educational, emotional, and participatory historical narratives. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using Tilden’s six principles of interpretation: Relate, Reveal, The Art of Interpretation, Provoke, The Whole, and Approach for Children. The findings indicate that tour guides act as mediators between history and the public through adaptive, communicative, and inspiring delivery styles. Bersukaria Walk emphasizes chronological accuracy and factual precision, while Let’s Walk highlights creative storytelling and emotional engagement. This historical interpretation enhances participants’ understanding of local values, fosters historical awareness, and strengthens urban cultural identity. The study contributes to the development of heritage interpretation and educational tourism research, offering practical recommendations for communities and local governments to develop participatory, inclusive, and sustainable walking tour
