Abstract
A peracetic acid plant with a production capacity of 45,000 tons per year will be established in the Karawang International Industrial City, West Java, operating 24 hours per day for 330 days per year. The main raw materials used are acetic acid supplied by PT Indo Acidatama, hydrogen peroxide from PT Evonik Degussa Peroxide, and sulfuric acid catalyst from PT Timuraya Tunggal. Peracetic acid is utilized as a sterilizing agent, a bleaching agent, and as a precursor for propylene oxide production. The manufacturing process employs acetic acid oxidation, in which 99.8% acetic acid, 35% hydrogen peroxide, and 60% sulfuric acid are reacted in a CSTR reactor at 45 °C and 1 atm with an equilibrium conversion of 97.8%. Because the reaction is exothermic, the reactor is equipped with a cooling jacket. The reaction product is purified in a distillation column, yielding peracetic acid as the light component and acetic acid as the heavy component. The overhead product is condensed and stabilized with phosphonic acid, while the bottoms stream—containing sulfuric acid and unreacted materials—is separated in a flash drum before being sent to the wastewater treatment unit. The plant operates as a limited liability company (PT) with a line-and-staff organizational structure, employing 154 personnel and occupying an area of 19,385 m². The required utilities include 6,900.88 lb/h of steam, 365.085 kW of electricity, 3,254.60 m³/day of water, and 33.84 L/h of fuel. Economic analysis indicates a fixed capital investment of Rp 676.94 billion and working capital of Rp 194.47 billion, with an ROI of 23.67%, IRR of 19.96%, payback period of 4 years and 3 months, and BEP of 30.04%, demonstrating that the plant is economically feasible to construct.
