Abstract

Giri Gajah is a hamlet in Giri Village, Gresik Regency, known for its local legend about a large stone that transformed into an elephant through the karomah of Sunan Giri. This legend reflects the richness of local culture, which has been preserved orally without visual media to support its documentation and conservation. Children aged 8-10, who are in the stage of concrete cognitive development, are more inclined towards interactive digital media, causing traditional folktales like the legend of Giri Gajah to be overlooked. To address this challenge, a picture storybook was designed as an engaging, interactive, and relevant educational medium tailored to the needs of children in the modern era. The design process of this book employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and literature studies. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-qualitative method, incorporating the theories of book leveling, cognitive development, and visual communication design. The book was designed with cheerful pastel-colored illustrations, simple narratives relatable to children, and local cultural elements that enhance its educational and inspirational aspects. The Giri Gajah picture storybook not only conveys the local legend but also integrates moral and cultural values suitable for children. The story is presented in an engaging plot, supported by characters and illustrations that foster an emotional connection with young readers. This book is expected to increase reading interest, introduce the local culture of Gresik, and preserve traditional values through an innovative visual approach.
