Abstract
The fragmented and inconsistent presentation of boarding house information creates substantial challenges in users’ ability to search, compare, and reserve rooms effectively. This study focuses on the design and usability evaluation of a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) solution for a boarding house reservation application, developed through the five-stage Design Thinking framework empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Insights from 30 respondents, comprising owners and renters in Surabaya, informed the development of low and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, structured through personas, user flows, and information architecture. Usability testing across task scenarios assessed learnability, efficiency, memorability, and error rates, complemented by the System Usability Scale (SUS) and Nielsen’s heuristic evaluation. In the first iteration, SUS scores of 74.5 (owner), 76.5 (renter), and 66 (admin) indicated acceptable usability but highlighted several interface issues. After iterative refinement based on empirical findings, the second evaluation recorded improved SUS scores of 90, 87, and 89, respectively. Final testing demonstrated high learnability (96–97%), strong memorability (95–96%), minimal error rates (0.0306–0.0800), and an overall SUS score of 94 (best imaginable). A minor decrease in efficiency was attributed to external network factors rather than design shortcomings. The results confirm that iterative, user-centered UI/UX design strengthened by heuristic auditing effectively addresses core pain points and leads to highly usable interface prototypes suitable for implementation.
