Abstract
This study examines the reception of science fiction fans toward sexual fantasy Alternative Universe (AU) in the film Dear David (2023). Using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis, this research focuses on how science fiction fans perceive the sexual fantasy AU written by the character Laras. Dear David portrays a teenager who expresses her sexual fantasies through an anonymous blog as a form of emotional outlet. The focus of this study is to explore how science fiction fans interpret this phenomenon. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten informants who are science fiction fans and had watched the film Dear David. The findings reveal various audience positions. Some negotiate the meaning by emphasizing the importance of ethical boundaries and social norms (negotiated), while others reject it as normalizing inappropriate behavior (oppositional). This study concludes that although sexual fantasy AU is seen as a space for imaginative expression, ethical awareness is essential to prevent negative impacts on society, and the role of the family is also crucial as a safe space for children to share and express themselves.
