Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of financial literacy, lifestyle, and e-wallet usage on smoking behavior with saving behavior as a mediating variable among Generation Z in Surabaya. The phenomenon of the growth of vape usage among Generation Z is the basis of this study, where financial literacy coupled with advances in financial technology and modern lifestyles are believed to have an impact on consumption habits, including vape usage. In this study, a quantitative approach was used by distributing questionnaires to 200 Generation Z respondents aged between 20 and 28 years old and residing in Surabaya. Data analysis was performed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) and the SmartPLS 4 application. The results of the study show that financial literacy has a positive but insignificant effect on smoking behavior, while lifestyle and e-wallet usage have a significant negative effect on smoking behavior. Meanwhile, saving behavior has a negative but insignificant effect on smoking behavior, and saving behavior as a mediator is unable to mediate the relationship between financial literacy, lifestyle, and e-wallet usage on smoking behavior. The findings from this study indicate that lifestyle and the convenience of e-wallet usage have a greater influence on the financial and consumption behavior of Generation Z than knowledge of financial literacy itself.
