Abstract
A 33,000-ton-per-year Butyl Oleate Plant from Butanol and Oleic Acid is planned to be established in the JIIPE Industrial Estate in Gresik, East Java. Butyl oleate has extensive uses in various industries, being used directly or as an ingredient in synthetic lubricant formulations. Furthermore, butyl oleate functions as a plasticizer, an additive to polymers or resins to increase the flexibility, pliability, and durability of plastic products. Its use helps prevent polymers from becoming brittle and improves the mechanical properties of the final product. Furthermore, its slippery and oily properties contribute to the gloss of the final coating, making paints or coatings more visually appealing. The plant is planned to operate 330 days a year, 24 hours a day. The butyl oleate production process, in short, begins with the reaction of oleic acid and butanol with a sulfuric acid catalyst at 120°C to form butyl oleate. The sulfuric acid is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide in a neutralizer at 30°C to form sodium sulfate and water. The sodium sulfate and water are separated from the other components using a decanter, while the other components, such as oleic acid, butanol, and butyl oleate, are separated using a distillation tower. Distillation Tower 1 separates butanol from the other components, and the butanol is recycled to the reactor. Distillation Tower 2 separates butyl oleate as the distillate, which is our factory's final product, and the bottom product, oleic acid, is recycled to the reactor. In conclusion, the production capacity is 33,000 tons/year, the company form is a limited liability company, the organizational system is line and staff, the number of employees is 168 people, the location is in the industrial area of Jiipe Gresik, East Java, the factory area is 27,500 m2, operating time is 330 days/24 hours, with raw materials of oleic acid 3862.59 kg/hour, butanol 5067.94 kg/hour, sulfuric acid 82.55 kg/hour and produces products as much as butyl oleate 4166.67 kg/hour, sodium sulfate 119.612 kg/hour, for utility needs of water 192756.31 m3/day, electricity 402.659 kwh, diese needs; 10917.26 L/day, steam requirement 7376.62 lb/hour and bank interest of 8% per year, internal rate of return 40.3%, ROI after tax 46.95%, Pay back period 3.67 years and break even point (BEP) of 40.9%
