Abstract
The preliminary design of an acrolein plant from glycerol feedstock through a dehydration process was carried out with a production capacity of 45,000 tons per year. Acrolein (C₃H₄O) is an important intermediate widely used in the production of acrylic acid, coatings, and paper. In Indonesia, the demand for acrolein continues to rise and is currently met entirely by imports, making local production strategically important. The process involves mixing 99.7% glycerol with water, vaporizing at 300°C, and dehydrating in a fixed-bed multitube reactor with 98.5% conversion. The products are separated through multi-stage distillation to obtain acrolein of about 97% purity, while by-products such as acetol, water, and unreacted glycerol are recycled. Based on technical and economic evaluation, establishing the plant in Medang Kampai Industrial Area, Dumai, Riau Province, is considered feasible.
