Abstract
Building on the concept of mediamorphosis that has transformed media into participatory, audience-centric ecosystems, radio must adapt through interactive content. In Surabaya, M Radio 98.8 FM has developed the Keluarga Reporter M Radio (KRMR) community, which contributes actively to the “Morning Drive” program a prime-time slot with high demand for utility information. This study aims to analyze KRMR’s engagement processes in fostering citizen journalism during “Morning Drive” and to map the forms of participation that cultivate an active, collaborative, and sustainable citizen-journalism culture. This research employs a qualitative, ethnographic approach, positioning the researcher as a participant-as-observer (insider) within the KRMR community at M Radio 98.8 FM Surabaya. Data were collected from March–July 2025 at the studio and through the community’s online channels via participatory observation (online/offline), semi-structured in-depth interviews (in-person/phone/video) with informed consent, and documentation and digital artifacts (broadcast recordings, photographs, screenshots). The data analysis techniques used were source triangulation and researcher reflexivity to ensure the credibility, ethical rigor, and traceability of the findings. The research results show that innovation adoption, participatory culture, and community media practices can reinforce each other. Stages (1) innovation diffusion explain the evolution of member involvement, (2) participatory culture describes how this involvement is realized in practice, and (3) community media provides a structural framework for democratic participation. By addressing challenges and implementing strengthening strategies, KRMR has the potential to become an example of inclusive, creative, and empowering community media.
