Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reception of generation Z viewers who have a background of experience or awareness of conflicts—such as injustice, oppression, or issues related to heroism—toward the portrayal of heroism in the Korean drama series Study Group on Viu. Stuart Hall’s reception theory is applied, which categorizes audience understanding or interpretation of media messages into three positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method within a constructivist paradigm. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, with specific criteria: male or female users of the Viu streaming platform who have watched Study Group and possess either personal experience or awareness of conflicts depicted in the series, including injustice, oppression, or forms of heroism. The findings, based on in-depth interviews with eight informants, indicate that the participants did not share a single reception position; instead, they were distributed across the three positions defined in Stuart Hall theory. Differences in the informants’ interpretations of heroism in Study Group emerged from variations in their viewing experiences, social backgrounds, and personal knowledge or insights. Keywords: Reception Analysis, Heroism, Study Group
