Abstract
This research investigates the phenomenon of the "Marriage is Scary" issue, which encompasses narratives about marriage that have grown and spread on the TikTok social media platform. The evolution of social media has significantly altered human communication patterns. Beyond merely serving as channels for communication and entertainment, social media platforms now provide a crucial space for users to express their opinions and narratives. Digital spaces facilitate the easy emergence and proliferation of such narratives and opinions. A prominent example is the discourse on marriage found in "Marriage is Scary" content, heavily supported by the use of the #marriageisscary hashtag on TikTok. The "Marriage is Scary" community exhibits diverse responses to this issue, consequently fostering various conversations among users. Content featuring the #marriageisscary hashtag establishes an interconnected communication network aimed at shaping public opinion regarding marriage. This study seeks to map and analyze the structure of communication networks within the #marriageisscary digital community on the TikTok social media platform, to identify key actors instrumental in creating these interconnected networks. Adopting a positivist paradigm, this research employs a descriptive quantitative method, analyzed through Social Network Analysis. Data collection was performed using ASIGTA software, and the analysis was conducted using NodeXL. The research findings illustrate the network structure, clusters, and key actors within the network formed around the #marriageisscary hashtag. The "Marriage is Scary" issue in this study proliferated through users' digital activities, including posting content, utilizing hashtags, and mentioning other user accounts. This study concludes that the #marriageisscary communication network features actors who play a significant role in constructing and disseminating the issue within conversations on the TikTok social media platform. User accounts involved in the "Marriage is Scary" activism include ordinary users, groups of influencers and content creators, media organizations, psychology experts, and religious groups. This research also highlights the use of several hashtags that significantly contributed to the spread of the "Marriage is Scary" issue.
