Abstract
Gender equality is a critical issue in modern society that is often represented through mass media, including television dramas. Merajut Dendam is one of the series that presents a critique of patriarchal culture through its visual narrative and character development. This study aimed to analyze how gender equality was represented in the series using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through visual documentation, then analyzed using Barthes' three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings revealed that the series delivered a progressive portrayal of gender roles through female characters who appeared independent and empowered in the public sphere, as well as male characters who contributed to domestic life. The main character, Nina, was depicted as surpassing traditional gender stereotypes by serving as a strong leader, while male characters such as Rasya were shown taking part in caregiving and household responsibilities. The series also presented the transformation of supporting characters, such as Widya, who came to realize the inequalities of gender-biased parenting. In conclusion, Merajut Dendam not only represented the shifting roles of men and women but also conveyed a critical reflection on patriarchy and encouraged audiences to reconsider the importance of gender equality in everyday life. In this context, media functioned not only as a source of entertainment but also as a tool for social education and transformation.
