Abstract
This study analyzes the representation of fatherlessness in Blonde (2022), a psychological biopic portraying the life of Marilyn Monroe through the character Norma Jeane. The absence of a father figure is central to the narrative and deeply influences the character’s identity, emotional state, and romantic behavior. This research uses a qualitative method with John Fiske’s semiotic approach, which examines meaning across three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings reveal that fatherlessness is intensely and consistently represented throughout the film via visual symbols, recurring dialogue, and scenes that depict Norma Jeane’s emotional yearning for a father. Her constant search for a protector is expressed through imagined conversations with her absent father, repeated use of “Daddy” to address romantic partners, and her dependency in dysfunctional relationships. These representations are reinforced by cinematic elements such as dim lighting, melancholic music, and close-up shots that emphasize loneliness and psychological trauma. Blonde portrays fatherlessness not merely as a personal tragedy but as a broader critique of patriarchal systems that overlook women’s emotional needs. The absent father becomes both the root of Norma Jeane’s emotional breakdown and a symbol of structural void in familial relationships. The film serves as a powerful cultural reflection on the psychosocial impact of paternal absence. Keywords: Fatherlessness, Representation, Semiotics, Blonde (2022)
