Abstract
This study aims to understand the perceptions of millennials and generation Z about the concept of the sandwich generation in the movie “Home Sweet Loan”. The background of this research is based on the current social phenomenon of the sandwich generation, where millennials and generation Z are increasingly feeling the burden of being a sandwich generation sandwiched between financial and emotional responsibilities to support and care for parents and children at the same time, so the film is considered relevant to their real conditions. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with perception analysis consisting of three stages, namely sensation, attention and interpretation. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with informants selected based on certain criteria, namely millennials and generation Z who have watched the movie “Home Sweet Loan” and documentation. The results showed that millennials and generation Z in Surabaya have different perceptions of the sandwich generation concept in the movie “Home Sweet Loan”. Millennials tend to view the role of the sandwich generation as a form of sacrifice and moral responsibility that is lived with full sincerity. For millennials, the financial pressures and burdens portrayed in the movie were not only perceived as challenges, but also as opportunities to do good, to be motivated to grow, and to benefit the family and the wider environment. In contrast, generation Z showed a more critical and reflective attitude, highlighting issues of equitable distribution of roles, the importance of boundaries and open communication within the family, and the right of individuals to have personal space and happiness. The perceptions of both generations are strongly influenced by their life experiences, values, and positions as actors or non-actors of the sandwich generation, so the process of interpreting this concept is very contextual and dynamic. The movie "Home Sweet Loan" proves to be an effective medium to raise social awareness, expand understanding of the sandwich generation issue, and invite the public to provide real support for the sandwich generation in facing complex family challenges.
