Abstract
This study examines the construction of the horror-comedy genre in the Indonesian adaptations Hello Ghost (2023) and Kang Mak from Pee Mak (2024), both successfully localized from foreign films and embedded within Indonesian cultural contexts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with the Repertoire of Elements method, the research analyzes narrative elements, characterization, setting, iconography, and visual and audio styles. Rick Altman’s genre theory is applied to explore the interaction between film texts, production institutions, and audiences in the cultural adaptation process. Findings reveal that both films effectively balance horror and comedy elements through strong cultural approaches. Hello Ghost emphasizes emotional horror with personal symbols reflecting trauma and healing, while Kang Mak from Pee Mak, adapted from the Thai horror-comedy Pee Mak, highlights comedic horror rooted in local beliefs such as shamanic rituals and mystical objects. Comedy is delivered through humorous characters, slapstick, dark comedy, and miscommunication, enriching the narrative dynamics. Both films employ linear narratives with flashbacks, supported by visual and audio aesthetics that balance tension and humor. This study concludes that the rising trend of foreign film adaptations in Indonesia’s horror-comedy genre demonstrates genre flexibility and cultural adaptation strategies that offer entertainment alongside meaningful social and cultural reflections. The success of these films underscores the vital role of adaptation in the growth of the national film industry.
