Abstract

Violence against women in Indonesia is still a serious problem that requires special attention. The lack of awareness of women about the importance of preparing themselves to face the threat of physical and sexual violence is the trigger for the high number of these cases. The low participation of women in the martial art of pencak silat is also exacerbated by the social stereotype that self-defense is not for women. Therefore, effective campaign media is needed to increase women's awareness of the importance of self-defense, while at the same time building a positive image that pencak silat is relevant and important for women. This study uses a visual communication design method with a qualitative approach through the collection of primary and secondary data, including observation, interviews, and distributing questionnaires to women aged 12–25 years. Analysis was carried out on the needs of the target audience, appropriate media, and the right campaign message. This data is used to formulate a campaign concept in the form of a video series with a dramatic and cinematic storytelling approach, and is adjusted to the characteristics of the TikTok social media platform. The design results show that the video series titled Mawar Hitam, consisting of 10 episodes with a duration of 1–3 minutes, is able to package the issue of self-defense in an emotional, informative, and inspiring way. Through the narrative of a girl's struggle in facing violence, as well as an emphasis on pencak silat techniques as a self-defense solution, this video is expected to raise awareness, encourage women's participation in self-defense, and change the stigma that pencak silat is not only for men. Through a strong visual approach and distribution strategy on TikTok, this campaign has the potential to reach a wide audience, especially teenage girls who are the main target. Thus, this project not only provides education about self-defense, but also helps preserve the culture of pencak silat as a national heritage and builds women's courage in protecting themselves in public spaces.
