Abstract

Surabaya, known as the City of Heroes, holds significant historical value, particularly within the Old Town Area, which is currently being revitalized as a heritage tourism destination. One of its notable sections, the European Zone, houses many colonial-era buildings that bear witness to the struggles of the Surabayan people during colonial times and the events of November 10, 1945. Unfortunately, the delivery of historical information in an engaging and educational manner remains limited. To address this, the illustrated pop-up book titled “I’m Here, Eurobaya!” is designed as a fun and educational medium to introduce the history and architecture of the European Zone, especially to younger generations. This project employs both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Field observations, interviews, and literature studies are conducted to gather historical and cultural context. Meanwhile, questionnaires are distributed to better understand the target audience’s needs regarding visual educational media. These findings serve as the foundation for developing appropriate visual, narrative, and interactive concepts. The “I’m Here, Eurobaya!” pop-up book features a semi-watercolor visual style and introduces two guide characters, Cak Sura and Ning Aya. It includes interactive elements such as 3D pop-ups, pull tabs, and hidden tabs. The narrative is crafted in a light and engaging tone to foster reader involvement. Some of the iconic buildings highlighted include the Internatio Building, De Javasche Bank, Gedung Singa, and the Red Bridge, among others. The book’s impact is further enhanced by supporting merchandise such as shirts, hats, tote bags, pouches, keychains, and more. Through its appealing visuals and interactive experience, “I’m Here, Eurobaya!” aspires to be an enjoyable gateway to history, nurturing a deeper appreciation for Surabaya’s cultural heritage. This book serves not only as an educational tool but also as part of a creative and inspiring tourism promotion strategy.
