Abstract

Dioctyl phthalate is a compound with a wide range of applications in the chemical industry. It is used as an intermediate in polymer production and as a plasticizer, making the demand for dioctyl phthalate increasingly significant in the industrial sector. The opportunity to establish a dioctyl phthalate plant in Indonesia is quite promising, necessitating the planning of a chemical plant producing dioctyl phthalate. This plant is planned to be established in 2028 with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year at the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) in Sukomulyo Village, Manyar District, Gresik Regency. The plant will operate for 330 days per year with a workforce of 199 employees. Dioctyl phthalate is produced through an esterification process, in which phthalic anhydride reacts with 2-ethyl hexanol in Reactor-1 to form monooctyl phthalate. Reactor-1 operates at a temperature of 90°C and a pressure of 1 atm. The reaction in this reactor is irreversible, endothermic, and achieves complete conversion. In the second reaction, monooctyl phthalate reacts with 2-ethyl hexanol to form dioctyl phthalate. Reactor-2 operates at a temperature of 125°C and a pressure of 1 atm. This reaction is exothermic and achieves a 98% conversion rate. After catalyst separation in the neutralizer, the product is sent to a decanter to separate components based on their specific gravity. The overhead product from the decanter, consisting of dioctyl phthalate, monooctyl phthalate, and 2-ethyl hexanol, is directed to a distillation column to separate dioctyl phthalate from the mixture. The distillate bottom product, which consists of monooctyl phthalate and 2-ethyl hexanol, is returned to Reactor-2, while the bottom product is sent to the storage tank.
