Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of criminality in the film "Agak Laen" using John Fiske's semiotic approach, which encompasses three levels of codes: reality, representation, and ideology. The film combines elements of comedy and horror to depict criminal acts within the social and cultural context of Indonesia. Through an in-depth examination, this study reveals that criminality in the film is portrayed as a result of social, economic, and moral pressures experienced by the characters. Visual elements such as camera angles, lighting and editing are utilized to highlight the moral complexities underlying each criminal act. Furthermore, the film reflects ideological values that emphasize social inequality and critique societal conditions. This research contributes to understanding how films as a medium shape public perception of social issues, particularly criminality, and providesinsightsfor media practitioners on presenting sensitive topics in a more balanced and reflective manner.
