Abstract

In communication, self-disclosure is a crucial aspect. Openness or self-disclosure is the ability or willingness of an individual to provide information about themselves to others. This openness is necessary in every relationship, including romantic ones. In romantic relationships, early adult partners are those who are serious about building a connection. However, for early adult partners engaged in a long-distance relationship, communication openness is essential to maintain their bond. The aim of this research is to understand the self-disclosure practices of early adult couples in sustaining their relationship leading to marriage. This study employs a qualitative method, conducting in-depth interviews with four couples who have successfully maintained their relationship to the marriage stage. The findings reveal that all four couples emphasize the importance of openness or self-disclosure in their relationships, especially for those in a long-distance relationship. This is because of the limited opportunities for face-to-face meetings, making openness through communication media such as chatting, phone calls, and video calls crucial in preserving the harmony of the relationship and successfully enduring through the journey to marriage.
