Abstract

This research examines the perceptions of Generation Z in Surabaya towards online media coverage, specifically Bisnis.com's reports on online loan defaults. The objective is to understand how Gen Z interprets and reacts to this news, considering factors such as media literacy, trust in online sources, and the impact of the coverage on their financial decisions. The perception process includes stages of sensation, attention, and interpretation. The research methodology employs a qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews with Generation Z individuals in Surabaya. The aim is to discern the perceptions of Surabaya’s Gen Z towards the online loan default news on Bisnis.com. The findings reveal that Gen Z's perceptions vary, including negative views towards borrowers and online lending services, as well as sympathetic views towards borrowers. This study indicates that mass media have several effects: cognitive effects in the form of increased knowledge, conative effects in the form of changes in financial attitudes, and affective effects in the form of emotions felt by individuals.
